My Story

While pursuing a doctorate degree in biomedical engineering in 2011, I had an epiphany. I realized that I loved writing and communicating about my research just as much (or more) than working at the lab bench. A few months later, I started a blog (this blog) and took a brazen leap in the world of science communication. I’ve maintained From The Lab Bench, a blog about all things science communication originally hosted on SciLogs.com, since 2011.

My name is Paige Brown Jarreau and I’m based in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. I’ve been pursuing science communication full-time since 2011, when I moved across the country to enroll in a mass communication Ph.D. program. I completed my Ph.D. at the LSU Manship School in 2015, focusing in science communication (SciComm). My research has focused on the intersection of science communication and new media. I then completed a year of postdoctoral research and teaching as the Lamar Family Scholar at the LSU Manship School before starting my career as a practitioner.

I’ve held various science and health communication positions. In the past few years, I’ve been Science Communication Specialist for the LSU College of Science, Director and then VP of Science Communication at LifeOmic, co-founder of Lifeology, and adjunct for the LSU Manship School. I’m currently a science communicator for the NIH Center for Alzheimer’s and Related Dementias (CARD). I also still pursue passion projects like consulting, science communication training and teaching!

I’ve written for various outlets and communicated science in various formats including magazine articles, blog posts, poems, newsletters, infographics, videos, comics and other visual story formats. I’ve written for Altmetric, The Pursuit (a science blog hosted by LSU College of Science), the LSU Research Magazine, Nature Magazine, EMBO Reports, the Scientific American blog network, the LSU Impact Blog, American Scientist magazine, the LIFE Apps health news site and Lifeology.
